Santa Croce

A church has been on this site since the 1200’s. However, the current outer façade of Santa Croce was installed in the middle 1800’s, supported by a contribution from Sir Hans Sloane (of London's Sloane Square and founder of the British Museum). In the interior are the tombs of many famous Florentines, including the tomb of Galileo. In the book, “Galileo’s Daughter” by Dava Sobel, one reads that Galileo’s daughter is buried with him in this tomb. Among the treasures on view inside are ceramic reliefs by Luca della Robbia. In the site shots you can visit the peaceful interior cloistered courtyards.
