The Duomo

The Duomo (St. Maria del Fiore) was begun in the late 11th century and has been a work in progress for many hundreds of years. The current façade was placed in 1888. It is the cathedral of Florence. The four details for this site rise upward from the center door, the door at the left in this photo.

The building at the far right is the bell tower of Giotto. A view of the top of the tower and the cathedral are in Detail 4.

Egnatio Danti also placed an astronomical instrument in the Duomo.
