Cappelle Medicee

The Medici Chapels are attached to the Basilica of San Lorenzo and contain the tombs of many of the de' Medici family. Construction began in 1604. The Basilica and the Chapels are worth visiting, not only to see the art of Michelangelo and Donatello, but because of the connection of the de' Medici to Galileo’s life. It helps one to appreciate the far reaching power and influence of one family on Florentine history.

The entrance into the Chapels is seen in the lower left hand corner of the photo. The upper part of the door can be seen just above the blue truck. Some of the details are closeups of the Medici coat of arms above the door and the paintings on the inside of the cupola.
