Francesco Redi
1626-1697

Francesco Redi was a physician and poet. There are large similarities between the professional life of Francesco Redi and Galileo. Both were dependent on the patronage of the Medici’s and both relied on experiment to advance their ideas. Redi served as physician to Fernando II and Cosmio III. Redi’s scientific contribution was proving, by experiment, that maggots were fly larvae and not the result of spontaneous generation of life from decaying matter.
