Francesco Petrarca
1304-1374

Petrarch had a strong interest in classical literature and was regarded as an outstanding scholar. As a poet he is perhaps best know for his lyric sonnets to a (perhaps fictional) Laura. He is one of three Tuscan poets in the Famous Men and Women frescos by Andrea del Castagno. The 700th anniversary of Petrach’s death will be on July 20, 2004. A portrait, painted from a skull reconstruction, was planned to commemorate the anniversary. When Petrach’s tomb was opened, the skull that was in the tomb seemed to be that of a woman. A description of the mystery appeared in the April 6, 2004 Guardian.
