Santa Maria Novella
Detail #13

View of one of the sundials inscribed on the facade of Santa Maria Novella. The instruments kept both daily and annual time. In 1572 the Julian calendar was in use and was not synchronized to the seasons. These instruments, visible to the Florentine public, demonstrated the need for a new calendar, a need of interest to Cosimo I.
